SILVIE CU CAP NEGRU

Sylvia atricapilla

English:

Eurasian blackcap

Sylvia atricapilla

This is a medium-sized warbler species, measuring 13-15 cm; it is arguably the most easily recognizable member of its family, with the male sporting a black cap on its head, while the female has a brown one. Its overall plumage is grayish-brown on the back and lighter on the underparts. The Eurasian blackcap is one of the most widespread warbler species, found throughout nearly all of Europe and in North Africa. In our country, it occurs nationwide, though it is less common in dense coniferous forests.

It is a medium-sized songbird. The species exhibits slight sexual dimorphism: the male has black plumage on the crown of its head, while the female's is brown. The general coloration is grey on the underparts and brown on the upperparts. The legs are brown, and the beak is small and dark greyish-black. The body length ranges from 13 to 15 cm, and the weight from 16 to 25 g.

The genus name derives from the Latin word silva – meaning "forest" – in reference to its preferred habitat. The species name comes from the Latin words ater/atra ("black") and capillus ("hair of the head"), referring to the black coloration on the crown of the male.

In Romania, it is a summer visitor, spending the winter in the Mediterranean region. It arrives quite early in the spring, often appearing by the end of March. During milder winters, some individuals may remain. It nests in forests that include shrubs, as well as in parks and gardens with abundant vegetation. The nest, built by both sexes using small twigs and other plant material, is situated in the lower layers of the vegetation.

The song of the Eurasian blackcap is often considered second in beauty only to that of the nightingale. In fact, the nightingale's song can be discerned within the blackcap's own, which has earned it the nicknames "nightingale of the north" or "false nightingale." It sings while hidden in the vegetation, revealing the presence of a bird that is otherwise quite difficult to spot.

The Eurasian blackcap is primarily insectivorous, gleaning its prey from leaves and branches – rarely catching it in flight. In late summer and autumn, it consumes fruit, while in southern Europe, it also feeds on nectar and pollen, acting as an effective pollinator.

Like all warbler species, the blackcap must contend with challenges posed by the excessive use of pesticides, the over-trimming of shrubs and hedges, and the predation of nests – situated in the lower vegetation layer – by cats and other free-roaming animals.
